A family of attractive flowering shrubs with elegant arching or stiff erect branches that are awash with pretty blossom in summer. Easy-to-grow but not fully hardy in colder areas of the UK.

Foliage: Deciduous, simple ovate leaves.
Flowers: A profusion of open bell shaped pink or white flowers, which appear in large clusters on the tips of the stems. Single or double forms are available.

Soil: Moisture retentive but well-drained soil (chalk, clay, sand or loam). Any pH.
Conditions: Full sun or partial shade. Best grown in a south or west-facing aspect, in a sheltered location.
Habit: Tall, bushy.

Hardiness: Fairly hardy in most regions of the UK (down to -5 deg C). Note: some early-flowering varieties can be damaged by late frosts.
Plant outside in late autumn or winter. Container grown plants can be planted out at any reasonable time of year.
Grow in an open sunny position in any good, moisture retentive but well drained, fertile soil. Deutzia prefer neutral to alkaline soil. They will tollerate light shade but produce the best flowers in full sun.
The species are generally tall summer flowering shrubs, ideal for the middle or back of the shrubbery. Although, many modern dwarf cultivars are now available, suitable for patio containers or front of the border.
To create flowering hedge, plant a line of young plants spaced 12in (30cm) apart.
Water thoroughly during dry weather and do not let the soil to dry out. Mulch with organic matter in spring and apply a general fertilizer suitable for shrubs.
Prune after flowering each year by removing some of the old wood, which will encouraging new flowering shoots.
Generally pest and disease free.
Can be propagated easily from cuttings taken in summer or from hardwood cuttings later in the year. For example, take 4in (10cm) cuttings in summer and over winter in a cold frame. Alternatively take 12in (30cm) hardwood cuttings in autumn and root directly in the ground, in a well drained sandy soil.
A number of very good garden hybrids and cultivars are available. Larger forms can reach up to 10ft (3m) and compact varieties can be as small as 2ft (60cm).
Deutzia chunii is a useful medium sized shrub with arching stems, bearing long bunches of white flowers in summer. Height to 5ft (1.5m).
